Denverites looking for a break from soaring temperatures Thursday can visit cooling centers set up at recreation centers and library branches, city officials said.

Denver Parks and Recreation rec centers will be available as daytime cooling centers during regular business hours, with designated areas to sit, get a drink of water and use the bathroom.

Denver Public Library branches are also open to the public as a way to get out of the heat, city officials said.

Temperatures could reach 100 degrees or higher across the Front Range, and extreme heat can make people sick and is potentially fatal, Denver Public Health and Environment officials said.

People should plan to stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible, drink more water than usual, avoid using the stove or oven to cook, avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages and limit time outside.

Cool showers or baths work better than fans to cool down in extreme heat, city officials said.
