A rugged Colorado off-roading trail connecting Telluride and Red Mountain Pass is closed until further notice after an SUV got stuck teetering on the edge of a switchback, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office said.

The vehicle? A Kia Telluride.

The driver got stuck on Black Bear Pass, the 12,840-foot summit of Black Bear Road that winds past Bridal Veil Falls,

Despite warnings from locals, the South Carolina man took an SUV up the trail and got stuck with half of the vehicle teetering over the edge of a steep slope about three switchbacks past the waterfalls.

“It is not safe for cars to drive around it. The vehicle requires tow, and it is unknown at this point when this can happen,” sheriff’s officials said.

Bridal Veil Road up to the falls is also closed past the parking lot, including access to the Via Ferrata, the sheriff’s office said. Bridal Veil Trail is still open.

is a notoriously difficult off-roading trail that is open only to experienced drivers in four-wheel-drive and high-clearance vehicles, according to town officials. The road is closed to rental cars.
