Several inches of snow stacked up across the Denver area overnight, and more is on the way, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, 2.3 inches of snow had been reported at Denver International Airport, and 2 to 4 inches had accumulated across the rest of the metro area, weather service meteorologist Zach Hiris said.

The northwestern metro area, including Arvada, saw closer to 4 to 6 inches stack up overnight, Hiris said.

Another 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected Wednesday across most of the Denver area, and another 4 to 7 inches is forecast for the foothills, Hiris said.

The storm delayed starts at some metro-area schools and canceled classes at others.

As of 6:30 a.m., Hiris said the storm was close to halfway through, and the snow was expected to end by late morning or early afternoon.

"This wasn't a storm that benefited the mountains too much," Hiris said. "A lot of the snow stayed east of the continental divide and ... the heaviest snow is actually in the foothills."

  • 1 to 4 inches in Brighton, Broomfield, Commerce City, Lafayette and Northglenn
  • 2 to 5 inches in Arvada, Aurora, Boulder, Centennial, Denver, Highlands Ranch, Idaho Springs, Littleton and on Interstate 70's Floyd Hill
  • 2 to 7 inches in Castle Rock, Franktown and Golden
  • And 3 to 6 inches in Lakewood and Parker

A will remain in effect for the Denver and Boulder areas until 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service.

"Plan on slippery road conditions and slow travel," forecasters stated in the advisory. "The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning commute, with potential for slick roads to persist into the evening commute as well."

This is a developing story and may be updated.
