A Massachusetts man was sentenced to house arrest and three years of probation Friday after police arrested him for driving a pickup truck on the University of Colorado Boulder’s Folsom Field and hitting numerous signs and trees.

Karl E. Haglund, 49, pleaded guilty in November to one count of reckless endangerment and one count of criminal mischief between $2,000 and $,5000 as part of a plea agreement, according to online court records.

One count of criminal mischief between $100,000 and $1 million, one count of vehicular eluding, one count of reckless driving, one count of leaving the scene of an accident that caused only damage, one count of obstructing a police officer, one count of second-degree trespassing, one count of failure to obey a traffic control device and one count of failure to display proof of insurance was dismissed as part of the plea agreement, court records show.

Boulder County District Court Judge Andrew Hartman sentenced Haglund to three years of probation and 150 hours of community service, which can be transferred to his home state of Massachusetts. Haglund was also sentenced to 90 days of electronically monitored house arrest.

Haglund has 63 days of credit for time served.

“It was an extremely dangerous situation with this traffic rampage,” Hartman said. He added that Haglund has struggled with addiction, and staying sober in the aftermath of driving on the field and dealing with court procedures has proved Haglund’s resilience. .

Haglund said his actions hurt his relationship with his family, and that he has been working to improve himself and his life.

“I deeply regret what happened,” Haglund said. “I was not the only one hurt by my actions.”

Deputy District Attorney Sierra Grob asked Hartman to sentence Haglund to three years of probation and 90 days in jail. Haglund’s attorney, Kelly Schulten, had asked the court to avoid sentencing Haglund to more days in jail and stick to the probation.

Haglund was arrested after reportedly driving a blue pickup truck onto Folsom Field at CU Boulder on a Thursday night in September 2024, damaging the grass, after he had crashed elsewhere in the area multiple times, according to a .

Before getting to Folsom, Haglund hit several trees and signs near Foothills Parkway and Arapahoe Avenue, which was reported to police around 6:45 p.m. that night, the release stated.

When police arrived, Haglund drove away, nearly hit a person, kept driving, hit a car and a few more trees, according to the release. He then rammed a gate and drove onto Folsom Field, where he drove on the turf, damaging it, the release stated.

After Haglund made it onto the field, people posted photos on social media of a dark blue pickup truck stopped near the 40-yard line and a .

Once police officers were on-scene at the field, the driver got out of his truck and negotiated with officers before surrendering, Boulder police officials said.

Haglund was previously sentenced to probation in a 2002 driving while ability impaired case in Boulder County, court records show.
