A wildfire burning on 58 acres in southern Colorado forced evacuations for people living north of Westcliffe in Custer County, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.
County officials first reported the Buttermilk fire at 2:38 p.m., and reports from the national wildfire dispatch system WildCAD show the fire burning off of County Road 179, about 9 miles northwest of Westcliffe near Buttermilk Creek.
The fire was initially named the 299 fire but was renamed Wednesday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office sent an evacuation notice to people living in a 2-mile radius and deputies are going door to door to alert people, though many of the homes are vacation homes, agency officials said.

No structures have been destroyed by the fire, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday night on Facebook.
