Drivers caught speeding through a construction zone on Interstate 25 between Mead and Berthoud will automatically receive a $75 fine in the mail beginning Thursday as part of the .

The $75 fine is a civil penalty and the applies to drivers detected driving up to 24 mph above the posted speed limit in the work zone. However, first time violators speeding less than 10 mph over the posted limit may receive a warning in the mail, according to the .

Some drivers may have already received warning notices in the mail for speeding. During the warning period that began March 1, at least 4,000 warning letters were issued and excessive speeds dropped by 90% in the area, according to an emailed CDOT release.

“The goal isn’t to punish drivers; itap to prevent crashes before they happen,” said CDOT’s Chief Engineer Keith Stefanik in an emailed  release. “Speeding continues to be a contributing factor to crashes and fatalities in Colorado. Safer speeds save lives — itap that simple.”

There are eight cameras along the north and southbound lanes that measure a vehicle’s average speed (and license plate number); the cameras are marked by signage at least 300 feet in advance, according to the release.

The construction on the I-25 North express lanes began May 2024 and is scheduled to finish in 2028, according to . The spans about six miles between Colorado 56 and Colorado 66.

In a May 2024, CDOT Project Engineer Ben Rowles said the project will improve safety with wider shoulders and straighter curves, add toll lanes, reconstruct the Weld County Road 34 interchange, and rebuild eight bridges at Weld County Roads 32 and 34, Great Western Railway, Weld County Road 38 and Valley Road.

The camera area launched in July along Colorado 119 between Boulder and Longmont. Speeding has declined by more than 80% since penalties have been issued to drivers, according to a CDOT release.

A CDOT survey last year found that nearly of Coloradans admitted to speeding on main and local highways, the release states. CDOT data showed a large decrease in the number of speeding drivers after the enforcement period began at the beginning of the month on I-25, from upwards of 12,000 speeders mid-February to less than 3,000 speeders during the first week of March.

Notices for speeding will be sent within 30 days of the violation to the address that the vehicle is registered to in Colorado, or 60 days for addresses outside the state, according to . Similarly, the person the vehicle is registered to will receive the violation, regardless of who the speeding driver was. Drivers will not receive points on their license for civil penalties issued by the automated speed enforcement system, also according to .
