Regional Transportation District chief executive and general manager Debra Johnson announced to agency staff and employees on Wednesday that she has declined an offer to extend her contract after May 8, 2027.

Johnson wrote in an email to all RTD employees that she “decided to decline the offer, recognizing my many years of service at RTD, as well as for personal and professional reasons.”

She’s served in the dual roles as chief executive and general manager of RTD since November 2020.

RTD staff did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

RTD Director Chris Nicholson said Johnson “has led RTD with distinction through a series of difficult moments. She has been an effective sounding board for and active participant in the board’s recent efforts to improve the agency.”

In her announcement, Johnson said she’ll “remain focused on leading the agency” and will support RTD directors’ recruitment efforts if asked to help. “I can also attest that the leadership team shares that same commitment to support a smooth transition.”
