The laid off about 1% of its total workforce last week, the university said.

The total workforce across the public research university based in Golden is about 1,600 people, so around 16 employees lost their jobs, said Emilie Rusch, a spokesperson for Mines.

“While Mines remains financially strong, changing enrollment patterns, evolving administrative needs and increasing complexity across higher education require us to continually evaluate, prioritize and realign how we organize work and deliver services so Mines remains well positioned for the future,” Rusch said in a statement. “As a result of this process, Mines has reallocated some resources to support functions more closely aligned with the university’s future operations and strategy.”

The university did not say which positions it cut.

The layoffs come amid budget crises for universities across the state and nation as higher education faces federal funding cuts under the Trump administration, along with enrollment hits.

No additional positions are expected to be cut at this time, Rusch said, “though further reductions in already vacant positions may occur as Mines continues to better align our resources.”
