A Colorado man was , a 14er on the Western Slope near Ouray, according to his family.
Bret Brachman-Goldstein, 32, of Montrose was climbing the 14,150-foot when he fell, family members wrote in an obituary for Crippin Funeral Home.
Brachman-Goldstein’s identity was confirmed Tuesday by the
Investigators believe he was running on the mountain and fell on scree, or loose stones and rocky debris on the mountainside, the . His body was found by hikers on Thursday, and investigators believe he died the day before, on June 10.
“The cause and manner of death are pending autopsy and toxicology results, which are standard procedures in cases involving traumatic deaths,” Coroner Glenn Boyd said in a news release.
Brachman-Goldstein moved to Montrose from Denver about five years ago and loved the outdoors, his family wrote.
“Bret found a home and a place where he was truly free among the peaks with a community of wonderful friends that shared a boundless enthusiasm for wild places only the mountains could provide,” family members wrote in his obituary.
Sneffels was one of his favorite Colorado peaks, they added.
“Bret had climbed this mountain countless times alone and with his friends and his soul eternally remains within her embrace.”
