Denver police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of first-degree murder in a shooting near Garfield Lake Park, agency officials said Tuesday.
Officers arrested Fernando Sebastian Chavez on Monday night after identifying him as a suspect in the July 13 shooting in the 3800 block of West Arizona Avenue, department leaders said in a news release.
Police responded to a 911 call about the shooting at 9:11 p.m. and found a man, James Ruiz, who had been shot. Ruiz died at the scene.
Investigators found that Ruiz was trying to break up a fight between his girlfriend and another woman when Chavez shot him and fled the scene, Denver police said.
Chavez is being held without bail at the Downtown Detention Center, according to jail records. He appeared in Denver County Court on Tuesday morning, but his next court date was not immediately available.
