Another Aldi store may soon be added to the Denver area, as the German discount supermarket chain sets its sights on Thornton for a possible new location.
Recent pre-application materials submitted by Michigan-based Atwell LLC on behalf of ALDI Real Estate Inc. outline a proposed 20,436-square-foot grocery store at East 97th Avenue and Grant Street.
The proposed store would be on a roughly 2.85-acre site spanning 550 E. 97th Ave. and 9650 Grant St. The properties are currently vacant and include part of a parking lot next to a Bank of America, according to Thornton’s property map portal.
A cover letter to the city said the site will include beer and wine sales, along with 87 standard parking spaces and four accessible spaces to accommodate customers and employees. If approved, the store would operate daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and employ an estimated 18 to 20 people.
The site is near a Sam’s Club, an apartment complex and several restaurants and fast-food chains.
The Thornton proposal comes as Aldi continues expanding across Colorado, with plans underway for additional stores in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood and near Denver International Airport.
Earlier this year, the company announced plans to open more than 50 stores throughout the Denver and Colorado Springs areas. The expansion will be supported by a new distribution center in Aurora, expected to open in 2029 and create hundreds of jobs.
The grocery chain operates thousands of stores in more than 10 countries and plans to expand to by the end of 2028.
Representatives from Aldi and Atwell did not respond to requests for comment for more details.
