“As popular as D&D has gotten over the years, I figured the gimmick of that people would enjoy,” Mikulas said about combining a haircut with gameplay.

The cosmetologist who specializes in men’s haircuts and vibrant colors has worked in Loveland for about 2 ½ years, she said. She started developing “The Adventurer’s Chair” about a year ago after gauging the interest of some of her clients in fantasy role playing games.

“I wanted to get the same energy as Dungeons and Dragons without all the complications,” Mikulas said, adding that she loves Dungeons and Dragons herself, but understands it is a time and energy commitment for most.

On Monday, Mikulas met with Johnstown resident Neill Breuklander for his monthly cut. He said Mikulas told him she was developing her own game, and that although he had never played Dungeons and Dragons before, he was happy to be her test dummy as one of her regulars.

“She introduced the concept … and I was totally into it,” Breuklander said. “Itap real fun, real fun.”

When he arrived, Mikulas asked him the basics, like how short he wanted the sides and back of his head, but she also handed him dice and his character card, which explained things like abilities and weapons.

“Depending on how high or low the dice rolls depends on how well they succeed at that,” Mikulas said. “Which is what makes the game so variable and crazy and fun.”

With the hum of her electric razor, Breuklander’s adventure began.

“You enter the guild hall the day after your last adventure and look around and make eye contact with the guild master,” Mikulas said to Breuklander. As she explained the story to him, she would pause and allow him to make decisions on how he’d like to proceed.

During his hourlong appointment, he escorted a scholar, Jonathan, to an abandoned monastery to look for information, but along the way Breukdale’s character, Corin Ashwalker, learned more about mysterious gems he’s been collecting, shot an arrow through a massive spider’s eye after it attacked him, and finally collected old monastery texts.

“I keep collecting these gems. I want to know what the heck is going on with them,” Breukdale said. “I am crazy invested … I don’t know if (Mikulas) has fleshed out the story, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.”

Over the last five appointments, Breukdale has been going through the story with Mikulas. With each appointment, she picks off where the game last ended with that client.

“If they continue to play, the stories and the quests they take on connect to an overarching storyline,” Mikulas said.

Mikulas got her start at IBMC College in Fort Collins in 2018, before working at Super Cuts and Floyd’s 99 Barbershop. For “The Adventurer’s Chair,” she said she was inspired by a TikTok series called “60-second Dungeon” where players try to do a quick Dungeons and Dragons fight.

“If they can do that in 60-seconds, what can I do in 30 to 45 minutes?” Mikulas said she thought to herself.

She plays “The Adventurer’s Chair” with five or six of her clients now, she said, adding that the viral video has brought in new faces. Mikulas said she only recently started posting on TikTok consistently because she decided she wanted to try expanding her business.

“I had a feeling that some video of it would take off at some point … Like am I ready for what this might potentially bring in?” she said.

On that TikTok, users were impressed by Mikulas ability to multitask and many said they would actually enjoy getting their haircut if it was with Mikulas.

“Being a DM (Dungeon Master) and doing hair at the same time is an insane skill …” one user commented.

“Dnd instead of awkward small talk?!” another user commented.

Mikulas said going viral was overwhelming at first because she wanted to respond to everyone’s comments, but now she is grateful and looking forward to what the future holds, and potentially sharing “The Adventurer’s Chair” so other cosmetologists can do this with their own clients.

“Whatap been really cool is the people in the comments who are like ‘oh my gosh I would actually like getting my haircut if we did this.’”
