A wastewater treatment facility in southern Colorado this week spilled 4.25 million gallons of raw sewage into the Arkansas River, which is the water source for farms and ranches across the Eastern Plains.
Public health officials believe the spill at the city of Pueblo’s wastewater treatment plant, which is just east of Interstate 25, started Wednesday and was discovered Thursday.
“Laboratory results for water samples collected by Pueblo County yesterday from areas impacted by the spill are expected later today,” state officials said in a news release Friday afternoon.
Pueblo and state officials are working to make sure people affected by the spill are notified, and the Department of Agriculture notified produce growers in the Arkansas River Valley “upon learning the extent of the situation from the city of Pueblo.”
