Nearly half a million hikers scale Colorado’s 54 14,000-foot peaks every year. That’s a lot of footsteps – and the wear on the state’s highest peaks is starting to show. The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, an 11-year-old partnership of various nonprofits and the U.S. Forest Service, has identified 35 fourteeners in need of help and has conducted trail restoration on 17. On Saturday, the initiative is hosting a fundraiser to help it support the state’s fourteeners. The Fiesta of the Peaks is scheduled at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden (710 10th St.) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature a film from Telluride’s Mountainfilm festival, a raffle for gear, prize giveaways, including a Gold Pass good at all Colorado ski resorts, and a silent auction. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. All proceeds benefit the initiative. While there, map out a plan for climbing some of our most vista-rich hills.
