Former Denver Post sportswriter Dick Connor died in 1992 after an illustrious career that took him to destinations around the world.
Connor, a longtime columnist, took a personal interest in Colorado high school sports. He enjoyed going to a prep football or basketball game as much as covering the Broncos or Nuggets.
Accordingly, The Denver Post is seeking candidates for the Dick Connor A.C.E. (Adversity Conquered through Excellence) Award, presented annually to a high school senior who has overcome a handicap, hardship or tragedy to excel in sports. The winner must have exhibited courage, resolve, leadership and citizenship.
Please send letters of recommendation on school stationery to Neil H. Devlin, High School Sports Editor, The Denver Post, 1560 Broadway, Denver CO 80202.
The deadline for recommendations is June 1.
In June, the award winner and the winner’s coach, family and school representatives will have lunch with Post personnel and Connor’s widow, Mary Kay Connor-Spieler. She will present the winner a book of her late husband’s best columns. The winner also will receive a $2,000 scholarship from The Post.
Last year’s award winner was Daniel Belger of Bear Creek in Lakewood.
