Editor’s note: A long day for Christina Kim ended when play in the opening round of the U.S. Open was called because of weather. At 9-over par after 16 holes, Kim discussed her day.
I didn’t play well, very simply. I’d hit a good drive and have a wedge in, and I’d hit it over the green and wouldn’t get up and down, over and over and over and over. Or I’d miss the fairway, which in itself is the kiss of death. It’s hard to try and get up and down from 120 yards, thinking, ‘I have to make par from here.’ You’re putting a lot more pressure on yourself when you’re trying to make par with those yardages.
I’m not putting well either; nothing’s really working, to keep it simple. I look good, though.
On No. 8 (playing partner) Cristie Kerr told me, ‘You guys need to calm down.’ I told her, ‘You don’t have to listen.’ That’s not not getting along. We talked about it a little while ago; she intended no malice. I know that because I know her. I didn’t take it the wrong way.
People say we have a history because of something that happened last year; that’s the thing, last year is exactly that, last year. I just try to focus on now; I just had to keep to myself. It’s the Open, so you have a little more intensity going on, and things just work or they don’t.
Now, I just have to sleep well. I need to get a good amount of rest, because today just exhausted me. It’s been well over six hours and I’m not finished. It’s been extremely grueling and mentally exhausting. All I can do is go home, grab a quick bite and just fall dead asleep.
Christina Kim is a three-year veteran of the LPGA Tour.
