Responding to claims by the family of a young woman killed at Aurora Mall last week, mall officials said they tried to reach out and offer condolences to her family members.
“We would like to again express our heartfelt sympathy to the family. We can only imagine what a terribly difficult time this is for them,” mall management said in a statement issued late Sunday.
Krystal Martinez, 19, was killed in the shooting inside the mall June 21. Her boyfriend, Kyle Boyd, 23, was wounded along with a passer-by.
Mall officials said Martinez’s family members were not ejected from the shopping center the day after the shooting, as they had believed. Instead, the statement said, they were given as much time as they wanted and then offered an escort to their vehicle.
Family members also said the mall had failed to contact them directly to offer condolences. Mall officials said they requested contact information from the police but were denied.
Aurora police on Monday acknowledged the mall’s request. A victim advocate attempted to pass along the request to the family but never received its permission to give mall officials contact information, police said.
