Pueblo – Health officials are warning people to stay out of Fountain Creek, and not simply because of recent sewage spills in Colorado Springs.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recently collected samples from the creek that show elevated bacteria counts, particularly in summer months, said Heather Maio, director of environmental health for the Pueblo City-County Health Department.

Maio said some of the high levels occur after Colorado Springs sewage spills, but other sources also contribute to contamination during times of high flows, generally the summer months.

“What we see are high levels after spills and overflows, as well as bacteria from storm-water events,” Maio said.

Dr. Chris Nevin-Woods, Pueblo health department director, said bacteria counts are highest during the months when the water is a popular destination.

People or pets who come in contact with the water should wash it off. Anyone with open sores or wounds who comes in contact with the water should contact a physician.
