Denver police are warning of an Internet scam offering a job in check processing.
Victims typically are contacted via the Internet in response to a job inquiry and told of an opportunity in check processing, police said.
The victim is mailed several checks and told to deposit them in his bank account.
The victim is then instructed to forward the funds overseas, most often to Africa, police say.
It then turns out that the original checks sent to the victim are fake, and the victim’s account is drained.
Other popular scams include online dating or roommate ads; online job applications in which the victims are asked for personal information that compromises bank accounts, Social Security numbers and addresses; and victims being asked to make deposits in certain accounts or make electronic fund transfers, supposedly in return for making a profit.
Victims of any scam should report it to authorities and make their bank aware of the report, police said.
