One of the nation’s largest charitable organizations, the McCormick Tribune Foundation, has teamed up with 41 sports teams and media outlets in Colorado and elsewhere to raise money for Hurricane Katrina’s victims.

The foundation will match the first $1 million to the campaign at 50 cents on the dollar.

The organization also will pay all administrative costs for the campaign, so that cash collected and matched can be paid to disaster relief organizations providing short- and long-term aid.

The Broncos, the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Newspaper Agency, which handles business operations for The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, are among the partners in the effort.

The media and sports organizations are taking part by alerting the public to McCormick’s fundraising effort. “They are really getting the word out there,” said Kristin Gallagher, a spokesman for the foundation.

“At this point, we have a link from our own website to the McCormick website,” said Jim Saccomano, a spokesman for the Broncos.

Those who wish to donate can call 800-508-2848 or mail a check to McCormick Tribune Foundation, 435 N. Michigan Ave. Suite 790, Chicago, IL 60611. Online donations can be made at mccormicktribune.org.

The foundation is one of the nation’s largest charitable organizations, with combined assets of more than $1.5 billion.

The organization supports work in journalism, communities, citizenship and education.
