Islin Moy graduated from Smoky Hill High School in Aurora in the top 4 percent of her class, although she was only a junior.

Islin founded the school’s literary club and was the news editor of the Smoky Hill Express, the school newspaper. She also was editor of Expressions, Smoky Hill’s literary magazine.

As a junior, she participated in the Frontiers of Science Institute at the University of Northern Colorado, where she determined the optimal temperature for the synthesis of 6-thiouric acid, a metabolite of 6-thiopurine, a common cancer drug.

Islin also was a member of the Science Bowl team at Smoky Hill, which placed second at the Colorado regional competition.

She worked this summer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, focusing on an environmental management system for recycling. She also was a part-time research assistant for the Colorado Department of Transportation, investigating the de-icers for Denver International Airport, based on performance, safety and cost analysis.

Islin graduated with a 3.9 grade-point average and received faculty awards for exceptional quality and scholarly accomplishment.

Islin is attending Colorado School of Mines this fall on a Presidential Scholarship. She will major in chemistry, with a minor in economics and public affairs.
