You could drive from La Veta to Walsenburg in about 45 minutes if you stuck to the interstate. But then you would miss the giant rock formations and funky general stores that make a trek along Route 12 such a wonder. The tourist folks have dubbed this road “Highway of Legends” because of old Indian tales. We were more interested in uncovering some future legends, like a world-class skate park and some killer desserts at a country diner.
Trinidad to Walsenburg: 82 miles. Take Colorado 12 west to U.S. 160 east. It’ll drop you off at I-25.
