A graduate of Cherry Creek High School died Wednesday in an Army hospital in Texas from severe wounds he received in Iraq while
serving with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division.
Lance Cpl. Mark E. Engel, 21, son of Bill and Sharon Engel of Centennial, suffered extensive burns, lung damage and kidney
failure when his vehicle was hit by an improvised incendiary bomb on July 6 in Al Anbar Province, said his father. The bomb killed
four marines instantly, he said. Two others have survived the blast.
Engel, who graduated from high school in 2001, joined the Marine Corps within a couple of months of graduation and was in boot camp
on Sept. 11, Bill Engel said. Engel was in the first wave of the invasion of Iraq, and this was his second deployment there.
Funeral services are at noon Monday at Temple Sinai, 3509 S. Glencoe St. He also is survived by siblings Dana, Rachael, Eric and
Brad.
