College Station, Texas – Courtney Lewis scored on a 13-yard run in overtime to lift Texas A&M to a 16-13 come- from-behind win over Baylor on Saturday, the second straight year the Big 12 rivals have gone to overtime.
After Baylor’s Ryan Havens kicked a 21-yard field goal in the first overtime, Texas A&M ran two plays before Lewis scampered to the end zone untouched.
It was a bit of revenge for the Aggies, who lost 35-34 to Baylor in overtime last season when they were ranked 16th.
Trailing 10-7, Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) converted two fourth downs on a 17-play, 86-yard drive that ended on Todd Pegram’s 25-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining to send the game to overtime.
Texas A&M’s normally explosive offense was held in check for most of the game and was horrible in the first half. The Aggies managed just three first downs and 70 yards before halftime.
Reggie McNeal was off for most of the day, finishing 12-of-31 with two first-half interceptions for 132 yards. He often overthrew receivers and looked frustrated most of the day. He had thrown for more than 300 yards in each of his past two outings.
But he led the offense when the Aggies needed it most. McNeal ran for a first down on fourth-and-1 in the team’s game-tying drive and eight plays later found Chad Schroeder, who made a juggling catch for a 13-yard gain on fourth-and-7 with 2:27 remaining.
Baylor (3-1, 0-1) took the lead when Shawn Bell found Trent Shelton in the end zone for a 3-yard score in the third quarter.
The Bears had a chance to extend their lead early in the fourth quarter, but Havens missed a 42-yard field goal. He also missed a field goal in the second quarter.
Baylor scored on its first possession when Havens kicked a 26-yarder.
Texas A&M took a 7-3 lead in the first when Jorvorskie Lane bulled in from the 1-yard line.
Baylor got inside the A&M 5 twice more in the first half but could not convert, failing on fourth-and-1 the first time.
Just a couple of plays later, Anthony Airline intercepted McNeal’s pass on the Aggies’ 18. Bell’s 14-yard pass to Shaun Rochon got the Bears to the 4, but Bell fumbled the next snap and Texas A&M recovered.
Bell was 25-of-45 for 222 yards and a touchdown. Paul Mosley had 22 carries for 139 yards.
The Bears fell to 0-37 on the road in the Big 12. The most recent time Baylor had a three-game winning streak was in 2003, when Texas A&M beat the Bears 73-10 at College Station.
