Reflecting a boom in deer numbers in the Gunnison Basin, the Colorado Division of Wildlife will accept public comments on a proposal to create two new hunting opportunities in the area.
Wildlife managers are considering a September “high country” buck hunt, typically restricted to specific locations, such as areas above a certain elevation. DOW also will pursue the possibility of a mid-November hunt in conjunction with the fourth elk season. Game management units under consideration include 54, 55, 551, 66 and 67. Biologists estimate these units contain approximately 25,000 deer.
Comments should be made to Brandon Diamond at 300 New York Ave., Gunnison 81230, or call 970-641-7071.
Panel to decide big-game licenses
The Colorado Wildlife Commission will make a final decision on the balance of resident and nonresident big-game licenses at a Tuesday meeting in Salida at 9 a.m. at High Country Bank, 7360 West U.S. 50.
The policymaking body also will make a number of rulings involving adjustment of the preference point system, on fees to purchase a preference point, on fees landowners pay for special vouchers and changes in youth hunting regulations.
The commission also will continue discussion on the volatile issue of increasing the numbers of these special vouchers allocated to landowners.
