Xcel Energy officials were unable to say Wednesday how many new customers signed up for the Windsource wind-energy program following a report that power from Windsource is now cheaper than conventionally generated electricity.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that soaring natural-gas prices now make electricity more expensive for typical Xcel customers than for customers who voluntarily buy Windsource power.

Windsource customers have paid as much as $6 a month more for wind power until Xcel last week filed for an electric rate increase.

Effective Nov. 1, Windsource participants will pay as much as $10 a month less than conventional customers.

An Xcel spokesman said no information was available on new enrollments because the program’s director was out of the office Wednesday.
