Broncos offensive lineman Dwayne Carswell was injured and taken to a hospital after a multi-car wreck in Aurora this morning, police said.

Doctors at Aurora South Medical Center removed his spleen. Carswell also suffered injuries to his entire left internal cavity, multiple rib fractures, and a ruptured diaphragm.

Carswell did not cause the accident, but was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Aurora police Officer Anthony Guzman.

Carswell was on his way to Broncos headquarters about 7:10 a.m. this morning when the accident occured. A green Grand Am and silver Volvo were traveling north on Parker Road approaching Hampden Avenue when the driver of the Grand Am made an abrupt lane change, Guzman said.

The two cars collided and crossed the raised median and went into southbound traffic on Parker Road, striking three cars.

Carswell who was on the southbound side of Parker and a woman were taken to a hospital for treatment. It’s unknown which vehicle the woman occupied, Guzman said.

The woman was treated and later sent home.

Carswell is in “critical but stable” condition, according to the team, but his prognosis is “very good.”

The driver of the Grand Am who made the abrupt lane change was responsible for the crash, Guzman said.

“The accident was pretty serious in nature and we had to close down southbound traffic for a while to get the lanes cleared up,” Guzman said. “It caused a time delay. People need to slow down and take their time and allow themselves time to get to work.”
