A Colorado Springs police officer has been placed on leave after the fatal shooting Thursday night of a man described as a wanted fugitive.

On Thursday evening, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agents notified the police department about a surveillance operation at a home near 12th and Weber in the Springs. Police officers joined the operation to provide assistance.

Around 8:45 p.m., a man matching the description of the suspect left the home with two others. The three men began to drive away, and the police officers attempted to make a traffic stop. A brief chase began, then the suspect vehicle stopped and the fugitive began running. A block later he turned and confronted the officers, and showed a gun, according to a statement released by the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The police officer shot and killed the suspect, who was identified late Friday as Nickolous Acevedo, 22, of Colorado Springs. He was wanted for attempted first degree murder of a peace officer, burglary, and criminal mischief after an incident on October 17th in the town of Security.

The other two men in Acevedo’s car were arrested Thursday evening.

The officer’s name is not being released, and his administrative leave status is routine following a deadly force incident, according to Lt. Rafael Cintron, a police spokesman.

The shooting is under investigation by the DA’s office and police.
