Five years after building her environmentally friendly home, The Farmhouse, Julee Herdt has it on the market for $930,000.

Herdt, an associate professor of architecture at the University of Colorado at Denver, built the Boulder home to prove a house could be made almost completely with bio-based, recycled materials and still be livable.

The cabinets and wall panels are made from sunflower plants and soy adhesives, particleboard is made from wheat straw, and drywall is made from pressed wastepaper.

The Farmhouse is heated and cooled with a geo-exchange system that uses liquid-filled pipes to transfer heat between the house and the ground 150 feet below, where the temperature remains constant at about 50 degrees.

The 4,700-square-foot home has been featured on Home and Garden TV, National Public Radio, in the The New York Times and The Washington Post.

It has received energy awards from the state, the Colorado Renewable Energy Society and other organizations.
