CU officials called an afternoon news conference to name Mike Hankwitz the interim head coach who would lead the Buffaloes in preparation for the Dec. 27 Champs Sports Bowl.
Hankwitz, 57, is the Buffs’ defensive coordinator and is in his second year on his second stint at CU.
Hankwitz returned to Colorado from the University of Arizona, where he was the defensive coordinator and was named interim head coach after John Mackovic was fired after a 1-3 start in the 2003 season.
He joined the CU staff for the first time on March 4, 1985.
