Boston brewer’s Brown Ale

If lovers of the vast stable of Samuel Adams beers don’t like the Boston brewer’s Brown Ale, they have only themselves to blame.

The brewer did a survey among 11,000 beer-drinkers to ask which of two beers Sam Adams should release next. Brown Ale won over Bohemian Pilsner by 1,540 votes. Described by its maker as “a traditional beer descended from the first beers ever brewed commercially,” Samuel Adams Brown Ale, a traditional British style, has a voluptuous malt aroma and deep mahogany color, but little follow-through in flavor or finish. That should be OK with drinkers scared off by darker beers. For now, Brown Ale is available only in a 12-pack Brewmaster’s Collection of six brews ($12.99). Starting in February, it will be in stores in six-packs ($6.99).
