NBC Universal said Wednesday it would purchase Denver-based KDEN from Longmont Channel 25 Inc. and Longmont Broadcasting LLC to expand the reach of the Spanish-language network Telemundo in metro Denver.

Terms were not disclosed.

According to NBC Universal, the KDEN acquisition will give Telemundo access to 100 percent of Hispanic households in the Denver TV market.

Prior to the deal, Telemundo programming in the Denver area was broadcast on two low-signal channels, making it unavailable to many households. Telemundo would not say how many households the low-signal channels reached.

Channel 25 is currently a home-shopping network. Telemundo programming will be launched within 60 days following approval from the Federal Communications Commission, said Liz Fischer, spokeswoman for NBC Universal.

KDEN will be the 17th Spanish-language station owned and operated by the NBC Universal Television Stations division. Clara Rivas, head of the Telemundo station in San Antonio, will become KDEN’s vice president and general manager. She ran Telemundo’s Denver affiliate station in the 1990s.
