High school groundbreaking set
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lakewood High School is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday. The event, at 9700 W. Eighth Ave., is open to the public.
The facility replaces the original school, built in 1958, which is considered too costly for renovation. After the new school is completed, the old school will be demolished.
Students will continue to attend the current school during construction. The new school is scheduled to open by the fall of 2007.
Designed to accommodate 1,750 students, the $32.8 million project includes 170,000 square feet of new construction and 42,000 square feet of remodeling. The 28.5-acre site also will include new playing fields and reconfigured traffic and parking areas.
An invitation to “Power of One”
Aurora has launched a year-long program designed to connect and inspire the community through a series of collective cultural experiences.
“The Power of One” will feature four distinct segments: book, film, lecture series and panel- discussion series.
The book is “This Side of the Sky,” written by local author Elyse Singleton. People are encouraged to read the book and discuss it with friends and neighbors either at organized events offered through the program, at their own book clubs or through an online discussion group at www.auroragov.org/thepowerofone.
“The Power of One” film will follow in April. “The Power of One Perspective,” a lecture series, will be in August. “The Power of One Monumental Moment,” a panel-discussion series, will wrap up the program in November.
