Mark Beaudry knows Korey Kostur, and Kostur knows Beaudry.
After victories moved both past the first round of the Class 4A state wrestling championships Thursday night at the Pepsi Center, they are one step closer to a showdown in the title match at 145 pounds.
Both realize that wrestling, especially at the state tournament, is a match- by-match affair. Looking ahead can get you embarrassed or, worse, dropped into the consolation bracket. But neither could resist at least thinking about it.
Especially Kostur.
“I want to try to go and get some revenge,” said Kostur, who has lost just seven times in three seasons at Moffat County, but three have come against Pueblo South’s Beaudry.
Kostur (39-2) won the 140-pound title last season, and Beaudry (28-1) won it all at 135 pounds. Sitting on opposite sides of the bracket, the only way they will wrestle each other is if they make it to the final or slip into the consolations.
And if their match this season at Middle Park is any indicator, the fans could be in for a treat.
Beaudry needed overtime to earn a decision in that one.
“The reason I was named outstanding wrestler at that meet was because I beat (Kostur),” Beaudry said. “If he would have beaten me, he would have been the outstanding wrestler.”
Beaudry had his hands full in the first round against Sterling’s Kenny Carey, who in the second period caught Beaudry in a head-and-arm and briefly put his back to the mat. The move didn’t produce points, however, and Beaudry worked his way out and eventually recorded a pin with 45 seconds left in the third period.
“He caught me with that move, but sometimes when you get caught it opens up something else,” Beaudry said, adding, “It was a dogfight.”
Kostur pinned Joel Nikolaus of Pine Creek late in the second period, and he said walking in with a state title in his pocket helped.
“It relieves the pressure, at least,” Kostur said. “I know I’ve won one already.”
In what could have been the match of the day, in a day that featured 448 scheduled matches in four classifications, Longmont 160-pounder Steven Haddock (39-7) needed to go deep into a second overtime to get past Landon Hornbeck of Montrose.
With 10 seconds left, Haddock slipped out of the grasp of a gassed Hornbeck for a reversal, sending Haddock to a 7-5 victory.
In a much-watched match, Brooke Sauer of Golden, who made history as the first female wrestler to qualify for the Colorado tournament, lost a 14-0 decision to Jeremy Aguero of Pueblo South at 103 pounds.
In the same weight class, Dale Shull (34-0) of Fort Lupton stayed undefeated with an 18-3 technical fall against Ranum freshman Joe Martinez.
At 140 pounds, Alamosa’s Josh Hensley (42-0) kept his record perfect with the same 18-3 score against Rett Ackart of Woodland Park.
Rifle’s Luke Wooten (31-2), a returning state champion who moved up a class to 130 pounds, pinned Sand Creek’s Manual Martinez 34 seconds into the second period.
Sonny Yohn (40-0) of Alamosa, the 171-pound champion last season now wrestling at 189, moved on by beating Sterling’s Bo Beardsley.
