Matt Stiasny understands why he and the rest of the Dove Creek wrestlers were hardly given a second thought coming into the Class 2A state championships. He also knows that is about to change.
The Bulldogs have just three individual champions and no team titles in school history, and they barely cracked the top 20 in the state team race last season. But eight Dove Creek wrestlers qualified this season, and six cruised through the first round of competition with pins Thursday at the Pepsi Center.
“We are such a small school (93 students),” Stiasny said. “There are some schools with classes that are bigger than our whole school. … It’s nice to come into a big tournament and, boom, start winning all these matches.
Pretty soon people start asking, “Who are these guys?” Stiasny said.
Stiasny (37-3), who owns a state record in football with seven punts returned for touchdowns, bloodied Jared Oestman of Wray before pinning him in the second period to win his first-round match at 160 pounds.
Stiasny’s twin brother, Eric, notched a first-period pin against Center’s Adam Warsh at 152 pounds, and the Bulldogs hope that underdog status gives way to even more victories.
“We are a small school; nobody’s heard of us. They don’t even recognize our letter jackets,” Eric Stiasny (33-9) said.
That’s not a complaint. In fact, Dove Creek coach Shane Baughman said flying under the radar might catapult the Bulldogs to the top.
“This team likes to be overlooked,” Baughman said. “They like to come in and surprise people.”
Grant Hobbs (40-1) started Dove Creek off right by pinning Hayden Uhland of Eads at 103 pounds, and freshman Colten Huskey (39-0) remained undefeated after pinning Antonio Casias of Antonito at 119 pounds.
Senior 135-pounder Andrew Riddell (36-1) barely broke a sweat in his 46-second match against Wray’s Justin Lueth, and 215-pounder Braiden Banks (28-10) beat Jeb Stoltzfus of Custer County.
Hobbs, for one, wants to be the fourth Bulldog to win a title after finishing second as a sophomore.
“Second place wasn’t good enough for me,” he said. “I want to move up that totem pole.”
In other matches, two-time state champion Kevin LeValley of Limon started his way to a third title with a quick pin of Sargent’s Zach Harmon at 140 pounds. LeValley (39-0) owns titles at 119 and 130 pounds, and his past experience at this colossal tournament is an asset.
“I know what it feels like to wrestle in front of all these people, and I know the Pepsi Center,” LeValley said. “Wrestling is my thing.”
Merino’s Ross Brunkhardt (37-2), also a two-time champion, moved through his first-round match with a technical fall of Crowley County’s Brogan Walters in his pursuit of another title at 152 pounds.
Brunkhardt could face Meeker’s Joe LeBlanc (32-2) in the final. LeBlanc, the 145-pound champion last season, pinned Sargent’s Bubba Marquez in the first period.
Brandon Morris (171 pounds) and Tucker Lane (215), two returning champions from Nucla, needed a combined 58 seconds to move past the first round.
