Dinner tackles the land-mine problem
Have you been invited to (or hosted) a “Night of a Thousand Dinners”? No? Here’s the deal: The annual event raises funds to clear land mines and assist land-mine survivors. The idea is to host dinners between March 1, which commemorates the date of the Mine Ban Treaty, and April 4, recently recognized by the United Nations as International Day for Mine Awareness. Instead of bringing a gift to your host, you make a monetary donation to the charity. The campaign has raised $4 million so far. Consider:
There are up to 70 million land mines in up to 90 countries.
Land mines cost as little as $3 to make and up to $1,000 to remove.
A person, usually a civilian, is maimed or killed by a land mine at least once every hour and as often as every 22 minutes. One- third of victims lose a limb, and more than half die from the initial explosion.
One-third of land-mine victims survive, but suffer the loss of at least one limb.
