There were plenty of chilly spills for kayakers seeking to get a jump on the season at Monarch Mountain’s inaugural Kayaks on the Snow competition last weekend.

A field of 16 competed on the skiercross-style course for the grand prize, a cruiser bicycle, won by Chris Ones of Salida.

“This was the most well-attended of any event held at Monarch,” said Greg Ralph, director of marketing for the ski area. He added the ski area plans to hold the event next year.

Ralph reported no major injuries for the competitors but a fair share of bumps and bruises.
