Joey Harrington had planned to fly to Denver on Wednesday to visit the Broncos while his agents kept working to get him out of Detroit.
However, Harrington canceled his plans and made his intentions known. In a unique move, the lame-duck Lions quarterback issued a statement outlining his wishes to play for the Dolphins.
“I look forward to joining the Miami Dolphins whenever I am released or a trade is completed,” the statement read. “The Dolphins are an ascending team with great coaching, and I can’t wait to get started. … I am eager to get to work with my new team, whether that happens in a day, a week or a month.”
Harrington has agreed to a contract with the Dolphins, but the trade was being held up because the Lions wanted more compensation than Miami was offering. The Miami Herald reported Wednesday that the Dolphins have offered a sixth-round pick in the April 29-30 draft. The Lions are said to be looking for a fourth-round pick. If there is no trade, Harrington will be released by June 15.
Denver is one of several teams that had expressed interested in Harrington. The Broncos likely will bring in a quarterback to compete with incumbent backup Bradlee Van Pelt. The team likely will also draft a quarterback.
Lelie update
The agents for wide receiver Ashley Lelie have been given permission from the Broncos to shop him. Lelie is looking for the chance to be a No. 1 wideout.
If he is traded, it likely would be by the draft.
The Broncos are likely to deal Lelie if they acquire another wide receiver, then would try to trade him for a pick in the high to middle rounds.
