A man was killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train this morning, Denver police say.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, entered a restricted area near Mississippi Avenue and Santa Fe Drive said John White, Denver police spokesman.
“The victim entered a fenced-off area the public is not allowed to enter,” White said.
It is unclear why the victim climbed onto the Union Pacific tracks, he said.
BNSF engineers tried to stop the northbound train but were unable to do so before the victim was struck, White said.
Denver homicide investigators were interviewing witnesses including the engineers about the collision.
The investigation affected northbound traffic on Santa Fe for several hours.
BNSF officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
