“Dead Man’s Shoes”***|Richard (Paddy Considine) returns to the small English town of his childhood to right a wrong done his younger brother, the developmentally challenged Anthony. His will be a lethal reckoning, he assures us. And over the course of five days, he executes his payback on a gang of low-life thugs. In a swift 86 minutes, director Shane Meadows and co-writer/star Considine give us a methodical, handsome, emotionally intelligent version of the revenge flick. Many payback movies have no interest in challenging our sympathies, our complicity. Meadows and Considine don’t let Richard off the hook. And we dangle right there with him. |Not rated|86 minutes|Released today|Lisa Kennedy

“District B13″***|Forget those cars hurtling like Molotov cocktails in the “X-Men” sequel. In this French import, stuntman-turned-actor David Belle makes a jaw-dropping argument that the foot chase might be the next wave in action, and the body still can have the most special effect of all. Belle plays Paris ghetto dweller Leïto, who, along with cop Damien (Cyril Raffaelli, also a former stuntman), must find and disarm a bomb that has become the illicit property of kingpin Taha in a bunkered suburb in 2010. “District B13” is a bold action flick that body doubles as a cautionary tale about class, race and civic disregard. |R|85 minutes|Released today|Lisa Kennedy

“Kinky Boots”***|Don’t let the title toss you. The accent on this charmer about shoe-factory owner Charlie (Joel Edgerton) – who finds a muse of economic recovery in drag queen Lola – rests on bootcraft more than kinks. Although inspired by the saga of a factory in England that remade itself by making footwear for a very different clientele, “Kinky Boots” is a fable for a time of workplace angst. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Lola/Simon gives Julian Jarrold’s first feature film backbone and soul. |PG-13|106 minutes|Released today|Lisa Kennedy

“The Sentinel”**|When President Reagan was shot, Secret Service agent Pete Garrison took a bullet. Now, years later, he protects the first lady (Kim Basinger). When a plot surfaces to kill the president, Garrison has a secret that makes him a suspect. Kiefer Sutherland plays former friend-now-nemesis David Breckinridge. Garrison is meant to be a complicated hero, flawed and honorable. Yet Michael Douglas’ talent for finesse is wasted in a by-the- numbers script and Clark Johnson’s overheated directing. |PG-13|105 minutes|Released Aug. 29 |Lisa Kennedy
