DaShawn Walker, a senior guard on the University of Denver men’s basketball team, was selected to the preseason all-Sun Belt Conference first team in a poll of the league’s coaches.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Walker averaged 13.4 points and 4.4 rebounds last season.
The Pioneers were picked in the same poll to finish fourth in the Sun Belt’s seven-team West Division. Arkansas-Little Rock was selected to finish first.
Denver’s Tyesha Lowery, a senior guard, was named to the preseason all-Sun Belt women’s second team. The Pioneers were picked to finish fifth in the West Division, with Arkansas State the team to beat.
Mammoth’s Gait will coach Team Canada
Team Canada on Monday named Gary Gait, coach of the National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth, to the same position for its entry in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships, to be held in 2007.
Also, Mammoth general manager Steve Govett was selected to manage the Canadian team.
The indoor championships, sanctioned by the International Lacrosse Federation, will begin May 14 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will feature eight teams. The tournament is held every four years.
Parker, Surniak top CPGA tournament
Ted Parker of All Pro Sports and Paul Surniak of Sumo Golf Village won the inaugural Colorado PGA Points Championship at Cherry Creek Country Club after combining for an 8-under-par 64.
The four-ball, stroke-play tournament paired the leading golfers in the 2006 CPGA tournament points list using a blind draw.
Parker and Surniak shot seven birdies on the front nine to place two strokes ahead of second-place Chris Johnson of Raccoon Creek and Steve Kurtz of Wellshire, who finished at 6-under 66.
Also, Tray Shehee of Ute Creek hit a hole-in-one on the par-3, 208-yard 17th. He and partner Doug Cook of Flatirons finished tied for ninth.
