The Fort Lewis men’s soccer team capped its undefeated run through the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 2-0 victory over Metro State on Sunday at Dirks Field in Durango to win the conference championship.
The Skyhawks (18-1) got the game-winning goal from Chase Mikkelsen, who took a John Cunliffe free kick and scored against Metro State goalie Jordan Ivey in the 15th minute. Ben Gantenbein scored a rebound goal in the 78th minute to put the game out of reach.
Fort Lewis goaltender Tom Donley made six saves. Metro State finished 13-6-1.
Skyhawks women earn another upset for title
Ginny Maddox’s goal in the 33rd minute proved the game-winner as the No. 4-seeded Fort Lewis women’s soccer team upset No. 2 Regis 1-0 in a defense-dominated RMAC championship Sunday at Auraria Field.
It was the second upset in two days after the Skyhawks on Saturday eliminated No. 1 seed Metro State, snapping the Roadrunners’ 61-game home win streak, to reach the title game.
Maddox took a pass from Kim Sisneros for the goal. Bree Baker made two saves to lead the Skyhawks (15-7).
“The girls stepped up to the challenge today,” Fort Lewis coach Jaymee Carozza said. “Yesterday was a monumental win for them, and we wanted them to be just as excited today.”
Regis (11-7-4) combined with Fort Lewis for just 13 shots. Baker was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
