Getting your player ready...

Hey, kids! Need a not-too-sweet treat to bring to teacher or as a snack for your next sleepover? Try these easy-to-make, sturdy-for-transport treats from Williams-Sonoma’s “Sweet Treats: 25 Delicious Recipes That Kids Can Cook.” Pack a half-dozen bars in a wax paper bag or a plastic treat bag decorated for the holidays and you’re on your way. We also think these would be great made from almond butter for a nutty change of pace.

Peanut Butter Bars

Makes about 16 bars.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions

Position an oven rack in the center of the oven. Preheat to 350 degrees. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan with butter, then line it with parchment paper, letting it hang over two sides. In a medium bowl, stir togethr the flour, oats, baking soda and salt until well- blended. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar and peanut butter with an electric mixer until creamy, about three minutes. Turn off the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with the rubber spatula. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix. Turn off the mixer and add the dry ingredients and mix until well-blended. The dough will be very stiff. Using a spatula, spread the dough into the baking pan and press down evenly. Place the pan in the oven and bake until the top looks firm and golden, about 25 to 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and allow to cool completely. Lift the cookies from the pan on the parchment paper and dust with powdered sugar. Cut into 1- by 4-inch bars.
