Arvada – Firefighters and veterinarians saved 22 dogs from a blaze at the Best Friends Pet Kennel about 8 a.m. Monday. Three dogs died.
Two of the 22 rescued dogs were resuscitated and transported to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in critical condition.
A fire marshal’s investigation found that a water heater in the building’s workroom caused the fire.
Ten dogs were placed in another kennel on the property, and 10 were transported to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital for observation.
Four engine companies, a ladder company, two chiefs and two fire marshals raced to the fire, where black smoke poured from the back of the one-story brick building, according to the Arvada Fire District report.
