Getting your player ready...

Jeff Weaver finished off the Detroit Tigers in the World Series with his nifty Game 5 performance. On Friday, he launched a new beginning, agreeing in principle on a one-year, $8.325 million deal with the Seattle Mariners, according official paperwork filed to the players association.

The defending champion St. Louis Cardinals had made a late push to retain Weaver, but their offer was dwarfed by the Mariners, who have aggressively tried to upgrade their rotation this winter. Weaver, 30, went 8-14 last season with a 5.76 ERA. But he salvaged his season after the Angels released him on June 30 with nine losses and a 6.29 ERA, following a shelling by the Rockies.

Weaver, whose deal will become official when he passes a physical, can earn an additional $1 million in incentives if he reaches either 32 starts or 200 innings pitched.
