A mother and her 16-year-old daughter were in serious condition Wednesday, a day after they were both stabbed and the daughter hit with a hammer in front of a Denver elementary school.

The two were injured during a fight with three women they are related to after the suspects were verbally abusive, according to Denver County Court records.

Three women were arrested.

Bernadette Vigil, 33, and her 16-year-old daughter were ambushed at Castro Elementary School on South Lowell Boulevard, the court record says.

The 4:30 p.m. attack was witnessed by at least one elementary school student – the son of one of the suspects – who arrived at the school on a bus as the fight began, the records say.

Denver Public Schools sent letters home to parents of students at three schools – Traylor and Castro elementaries and Kepner Middle School.

Officials also offered counseling to anyone on the bus who may have seen the assault, said Lisa Schiff, spokeswoman for the district.

The bus was carrying students from Traylor and arrived at Castro to drop off students, Schiff said. Parents of Kepner students are being notified because Castro is on the route that the middle school students often use to walk home.

Yvonne Munoz, 25; Ashley Munoz, 21; and Natasha Munoz, 29, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and booked into the Denver City Jail, police said.
