More than 20 Denver Post journalists have been honored in state and international contests, including a “best in show” award for reporters Kevin Simpson and Miles Moffeit for their series “Teen Crime, Adult Time.”

The project, which examined the way Colorado’s criminal justice system deals with juveniles, was honored by the Colorado Society of Professional Journalists.

The judges said the piece deals with important facts with “powerful, engaging prose and personal narratives only extremely dedicated reporters can collect.”

In addition to best in show, the project won for best general reporting, series. The Post was awarded 15 other first- place awards in Division A by the Colorado SPJ. The Rocky Mountain News totaled 17 first-place awards.

Also in the SPJ contest, Neil Westergaard, editor of the Denver Business Journal, won the Lowell Thomas Award as journalist of the year. Brad Bradbury, who retired as publisher of Evergreen Newspapers, was awarded the Keeper of the Flame for career achievement.

Visual journalists at The Post totaled 10 awards in two international newspaper competitions for work published in 2006 – nine Awards of Excellence in the 28th annual Society of News Design judging and a bronze medal in the 15th annual Malofiej International Infographic Awards, held in Pamplona, Spain.

The Rocky Mountain News won eight awards in the SND competition.

Severiano C. Galván, a graphic artist at The Post, won the bronze Malofiej medal for a graphic explaining the dangers of aluminum bats in softball leagues.
