Denver police shot a woman armed with a knife Saturday evening during an apparent domestic violence incident near 29th and Lawrence streets.
The woman, who police did not identify, suffered a gunshot wound to the torso, Detective John White said.
White said that officers arrived just before 9 p.m. Saturday, responding to a report of felony menacing.
As police began interviewing residents of the town homes on the block, a woman arrived brandishing a knife.
One officer fired a single shot, White said. An ambulance took the woman to Denver Health Medical Center.
The confrontation took place in front of a townhome in the 1100 block of 29th Street.
A man who lives across the street from the scene said he awoke when he heard a woman screaming outside.
“She was trying to get in” a house, the man said. “The police came, and they kept telling her to ‘Get down, get down.’ Then I heard a shot.”
Witnesses said the woman was lying in the street after the gun was fired.
White said the woman may have been at the scene before officers initially arrived, then left and returned.
