Despite record-high gas prices, American’s are expected to travel in large numbers over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, AAA Colorado said today.

The auto group is projecting that 38.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over the long holiday weekend, up 1.7 percent over last year.

“People are still traveling despite the higher costs,” said Sandra Barnes, AAA Colorado’s Director of Travel, said in statement. “Travelers find other ways to save money such as staying in less expensive hotels, eating at less expensive restaurants, or traveling closer to home.”

The average price for a tank of unleaded gas in Colorado hit an all-time high of $3.27 today, up from 2.83 per gallon on the same day last year.

The national average hit $3.11.

The top in-state destinations are Denver, Durango and Colorado Springs.

The Travel Industry Association also released its summer travel forecast Thursday morning, projecting that a record 329.6 million Americans will take a major trip between June and August, up 1.4 percent over last year.
