On the same day a report alleged he failed an amphetamines test, Jason Giambi met with lawyers from the baseball commissioner’s office Wednesday to discuss his recent comments on steroids.

The New York Yankees slugger was not interviewed about the amphetamine report, which appeared in the New York Daily News. The paper said he flunked the test within the past year.

Asked about the report, Giambi said: “I can’t give you an accurate explanation.” Asked about the meeting, he said, “I hope it went smooth. It was definitely a willingness on both sides.”

Giambi said no follow-up session has been scheduled.

Roger Clemens allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings while pitching for Double-A Trenton (N.J.) against Boston’s Portland, Maine, affiliate. He threw 64-of-102 pitches for strikes, walked four, struck out five, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. He refused to say where his next start for the Yankees would be.

Pitcher Carl Pavano is headed for reconstructive elbow surgery, and will be sidelined for most, if not all, of what remains on his $39.95 million, four-year deal that runs through 2008.

Devil Rays: Rookie Elijah Dukes was held out of the lineup against Seattle following a published report that his estranged wife sought a restraining order after being threatened by the 22-year-old outfielder.

The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported NiShea Gilbert filed for court protection after receiving a threatening message on her cellphone May 2, as well as a text message that included a picture of a handgun.

Phillies: First baseman Ryan Howard (quadriceps) hit a game-winning home run and went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in a rehab start at Class A Lakewood (N.J.).

Angels: Former closer Troy Percival, who had 324 saves from 1995-2005, said he will attempt a comeback.

Athletics: Oakland placed outfielder Milton Bradley on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and called up infielder Donnie Murphy from Triple-A Sacramento (Calif.).

Diamondbacks: Left-hander Randy Johnson will miss his start Friday with tendinitis in his forearm.
